FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jackson, MS-Attorney General Jim Hood and the State’s Public Service Commissioners are joining forces to warn Mississippians of certain scams involving auto warranties.

Both the Attorney General’s Office and the Public Service Commission have received a number of calls concerning auto warranty solicitors.  The caller usually tells the consumer that their auto warranty is about to expire and they need to take immediate action to extend their warranty.  However, the consumer may not actually have a warranty or it may not be about to expire.  The consumer often finds after purchasing such a policy, that they are denied reimbursement or they can no longer reach the company to file for reimbursement.

“These types of calls may be violations of the no-call law,” said Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley.  “Many of the folks we’re hearing from tell us they had their number listed on the do-not-call registry and were still solicited to extend an auto warranty.”

“Our agency is part of a multi-state effort to investigate these auto warranty sales scams to see if there are violations to the Consumer Protection Act,” said Attorney General Jim Hood.

Mississippians who have received these calls are encouraged to contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-281-4418 or the Public Service Commission at 1-800-356-6428

Consumers who have registered their telephone number on the Do-Not Call list and are still receiving telemarketing calls are encouraged to contact the Public Service Commission at 1-800-637-7722.

If possible, consumers are encouraged to record these calls and write down as much information as possible such as date/time of call and phone number shown, for those who have caller ID.
