FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jackson, MS – Attorney General Jim Hood today announced the conviction of a Mississippian in a child porn case prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General Cyber Crime Unit.  Shannon Gilbert, 22, of Morton, was convicted October 1, 2007, in Rankin County Circuit Court of one count of transmission of child pornography via the internet and four counts of possession of child pornography.
“Though It is shocking and disheartening to know this kind of crime is going on in our state, citizens should rest assured that our cyber crime experts are on top of cases like this and we are seeking convictions for every pervert we catch,” said Attorney General Jim Hood.
Rankin County Circuit Judge William E. Chapman, III sentenced Gilbert to five years behind bars, three years suspended, two years to serve day for day, and five years probation for each count, running concurrently. Gilbert will have to register as a sex offender, undergo psychological counseling, and his internet usage will be monitored by the Office of the Attorney General or Mississippi Department of Corrections.
The prosecution, investigation and forensic analysis were handled by the Cyber Crime Division of the Attorney General’s Office after receiving a Cyber Tip regarding the internet activity.
