FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jackson, MS--Attorney General Jim Hood today announced his displeasure with a bill pending in the United States Senate that would allow the insurance industry to set their own rates without state regulation. “We can’t get them to pay what they owe to Mississippians from Katrina and now they want to take more money from the people,” said General Hood. “It’s outrageous and I want Mississippians to be aware of it.” The legislation, introduced by Senators John Sununu (R-NH )and Tim Johnson (D-SD), gives insurance companies the choice of federal or state oversight and allows them to set rates without approval. The bill (SB2509) would create an Office of National Insurance within the Treasury Department. More information about SB2509 can be found at http://www.senate.gov. “All I’m asking is for Mississippians to be aware, do your own research and if it concerns you like it does me, then call your United States Senators and let them know,” said General Hood.
