Fallen Officers Annual Memorial Service
We have partnered with the Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police to host an annual candlelight vigil for fallen law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty at the state and local levels. Our first event was held in 2010, and attendance is open to all who wish to come and pay respects for these officers who gave all protecting us. Law enforcement officers are a special group of men and women who dedicate their lives to fighting crime, protecting the public, and making our neighborhoods a safer place to live and raise a family. Sadly, because of the danger associated with their jobs, we lose some of these heroes in the line of duty. The candlelight vigil is our way to say “thank you” to these fallen officers, their families, and friends for serving with honor and integrity. Please make plans to join us for the next candlelight vigil as we pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The candlelight vigil falls during National Police Week. May 15 is the date President John F. Kennedy, back in 1962, set aside as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week in which May 15 falls is designated as Police Week, and we hold the candlelight ceremony at the Mississippi Fallen Officers Memorial located between the Supreme Court and Sillers buildings just off of High Street in Jackson during that week.
