Anti-Bullying

“The anonymity and distance provided by the internet through social networking sites and text messaging on cellular telephones have caused an explosion in the number of incidents of cyberbullying,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “This carries over into the schools in the form of bullying. The psychological impact, particularly among preteen and teenage girls, has lead to teen suicide and could have lasting psychological effects on our children.”

“Everyone, from the Mississippi Board of Education to local school personnel, is taking this issue very seriously. We recognize that strong anti-bullying policies are just one important piece of ensuring that students remain safe and ready to learn,” Dr. Tom Burnham, State Superintendent of Education said. “Through the Fear Stops Here campaign, we want to continue educating our students on the importance of communicating any bullying related issue so that no one will feel intimidated by their peers.”

An awareness PSA, featuring real Mississippi students, has been created and can be seen at www.fearstopshere.com. The website has a collection of bullying resources for parents, students and teachers.
